Celiac Canadians Push for Fairer Grocery Costs

Canadians living with celiac disease face significant financial strain due to the high cost of gluten-free food, a medical necessity not just a lifestyle choice. A recent Globe and Mail article highlights how everyday gluten-free staples like bread, pasta, and baked goods remain far more expensive than their gluten-containing counterparts, placing ongoing pressure on individuals and families who must follow a strict gluten-free diet for life. Gluten-free foods often cost 150–500% more than regular products due to specialized ingredients and production requirements. These costs rose even faster during the pandemic, making it increasingly difficult for people with celiac disease to maintain a safe, balanced diet while managing rising expenses. While Canada does offer some tax relief through the Medical Expense Tax Credit, many find the process complex, time-consuming, and ultimately inadequate. Advocates argue that the current system fails to provide meaningful or equitable financial support.

In response, a federal House of Commons e-petition (E-6853) called on the Government of Canada to introduce a $1,000 refundable annual tax credit to help offset the cost of medically required gluten-free food. The petition successfully gathered signatures (over 33,000) before closing in December 2025. The federal government now has 45 days to issue an official response, which could signal whether meaningful policy change is on the horizon. For Canadians with celiac disease, this issue goes beyond grocery bills, it’s about fairness, access, and recognizing the real cost of managing a lifelong medical condition.
